Optimal CIP Cleaning 4: Tank cleaning

10 September 2025

How to get the most out of your CIP system?

Part 4 of the hacks for optimal CIP cleaning: tank cleaning!

In recent weeks, we’ve already discussed three key ingredients:

  1. Hygienic design
  2. Material selection
  3. Component selection

This week, we’ll focus on ingredient 4: tank cleaning.

Good design is the foundation. This prevents compromises or additional measures during cleaning.

Important for tank design:
✔ Preferably choose a vertical tank
✔ Do not combine tank and line cleaning
✔ Ensure good pressure regulation on the CIP supply
✔ Direct and complete spraying has the greatest impact
✔ Adjust the spray pattern to the application (180°, 270°, 360°)
✔ Take obstacles into account, such as nozzles, baffles, filters, and ventilation/venting
✔ Prevent loosened product from flowing back into the spray ball
✔ Avoid tank damage by correctly calculating ventilation/venting

You can also optimize tank cleaning during use:
✔ Regularly check the operation and condition of the spray balls
✔ Validate the spraying with the Riboflavin test

What is a Riboflavin test (fluorescence test)?
The surface is sprayed with a fluorescent riboflavin solution. After a CIP cycle, UV light is used to check whether everything has been properly cleaned.
